Dear ASC-List,

We have two member guests today.

Today's second member guest Dr Fabien Medvecky is President, Science Communicators' Association of New Zealand (SCANZ), Lecturer in Science Communication and Master's Programme Coordinator at The Centre for Science Communication, University of Otago.

As President of SCANZ (the NZ equivalent of ASC), he was fortunate to recently organise the annual conference which was held at the Otago Museum in Dunedin (Nov 14-16). They had over 60 presentations to more than 140 delegates from NZ, AUS, UK, South Africa and more, including ASC members Toss Gascoigne, Joan Leach, Jenni Metcalfe, Nancy Longnecker, Leonie Rennie and Sue Stocklmayer.

Fabien cares about value and is especially interested in ethical and economics values; how we talk about them and include them in our scientific discourse. His research sits at the intersection between science communication, science policy, economic theory and ethical theory. His work focuses on the tension between the objective aims of science and the value-driven reality of decision making, most notably by concentrating on ethical and economic issues related to science and the environment.

Before taking up his post in NZ, he was in the Science Communication Program at the University of Queensland, Australia. He went to New Zealand armed with a PhD in philosophy of science from the University of Sydney and a post graduate degree in economics from Murdoch University. He has published on ethics, economics, ecology, and science communication and policy.
