Re – FB Mentions - I tested it by trying to download it from the US site, but it came up with an error saying that my ID was only valid on the Aust site. I’ll keep an eye out for this on the Aust site as I think it will be really useful for my work, and I’ll report back to the ASC list when it’s there – I assume we’ll eventually get it!

Thanks Regan for alerting us to this.

Hi,

Sorry the tweet was pretty light in detail in that regard; it only came with a comment that it looked like an attempt by FB to do what Twitter has been able to do for ages.

I have no idea of the ins and outs of various iTunes sites - perhaps someone who knows something of the Appleverse can comment?

Cheers,

Regan

Hi Regan,

Thanks for this. It looks like it would be a really useful tool.

Did the tweet say when it’s likely to be released in Australia? I just tried to download it and it says it’s not available in Australia, but is in the US – does anyone know if its ok to download from the US iTunes site? I’m assuming so, it’s free anyway.

Yeah, I don’t think that’s an option for pages. I’ve been looking on and off for quite a while now. The only way to interact with a page is to post directly to it, which they can choose to publish or not. And you can check in, but that won’t tell the page who you are. It will just give a total number of check ins with anonymised demographic data.

On a personal facebook page, one can make a choice to be alerted whenever someone attempts to tag you and you can say Yes or No to the tagging. If that’s available for a group page then that’s the thing to do. It’s for a different reason but would let you know whenever tagging occurred.

Hi Ian,

As I understand it, someone tagging your page in a post to their own timeline doesn’t notify you. I think it’s an anti-spam thing, but I agree, it’s really frustrating.

I thought perhaps you could try a workaround where someone ‘checks in’ to your place (if your page is also a place). But that doesn’t work either!

On some pages (place pages only, I think), the things Facebook will notify you about are listed at your page > settings > notifications.

It seems foolish of Facebook. Surely the power in having a page is in being able to see how people are interacting with you. Notifications and check ins should be a simple thing for them to let us use.

HI Ian,

That may be because they have made their personal page secure such that it can't link to/notify external pages?

Hi sarah,

So it notifies you if someone tags your page in a personal post?

We have all our notifications turned on but only recieve them if someone specifically posts on our page...not about our page if that makes sense?

Hi Ian,

Yes, Facebook notifies page/community managers when someone else likes/interacts/comments on their page/community. Unless notifications are switched off, which most people would not do for pages/communities (feedback important, as you say). You should check your setup to ensure you're receiving what you want to receive.

Cheers

Hi all,

I am trying to figure out if it is possible to be notified if someone tags your Facebook page in a status they post on their personal page?

For example if I posted "I really like the Australian Science Communicators (ASC) from my personal page does the ASC know I have tagged them and I am in fact talking about them?

Any social media guns out there that can answer this question?

I have been testing this all morning with my organisations page but am having no luck.

We are deciding whether we start up a campaign telling people to use a hashtag or to tag our page but obviously if we can't tell they have tagged us, that won't work.

It is likely that this isn't even possible, but just seeing if anyone has an answer?

Thanks
Ian
