On behalf of Renae Sayers at Scitech.

Dear ASCers,

It is my delight to announce this year’s series of Profs and Pints – FREE evenings of lively banter, tackling those current and controversial science topics that will have you buzzing with your beer!

Held at The Flying Scotsman Velvet Lounge in Mt Lawley from 6-8pm, get in at 5.30pm, grab a couch and a beer, and saddle up for our first event:

Tues 12 June
ENTERING THE INSPIRATION VACUUM | When reality TV and YouTube can move a nation, is there still room for science heroes?
Are Australians in need of a science inspiration revolution? When apathy is the new black, do we need more Attenborough’s to switch our public on?

In this Profs we will debate the validity of the ‘Hero’ – the individual that stands for what we want our world to be. Do they exist? SHOULD they exist? Is it enough that anyone can simply upload their vision and let YouTube take its course?

Is science in need of a major facelift? Why do the Kardashians garner more public interest than the science behind their botox-laced lips? How can we make these worlds meet and get the public to question this ‘reality’ presented on the box?

This discussion will wrestle with how we are moved, what makes us get moving and whether we need to get out of our plasma-TV-adorned lounge room, to make a better vision for our country.

Speakers:

Emma Donnelly - Science Outreach Coordinator at Curtin University,

Prof Moira Clay – Director, Academic and Research Services at Telethon Institute for Child Health Research,

Thom Smyth - Marketing Manager at The Blue Room Theatre.
